邦訳は昨年までに一通りし、今は「The Birthgrave」から順に原書をよむ。電子版。
現在は「Hunting the White Witch」(The Birthgrave Trilogy Book 3)
用語集はここには作成しない。50行しか書き込めない。長編で忘れるので固有名称は手元に書き控えておくといいが…

The Birthgraveの世界の都市住民でない山野の部族民の女性が着ける面布、顔覆い布 shireen は、第一作で頻繁に言及されるものの具体的なイメージはあまりなく、アラビア女性の伝統衣装のような目線・鼻から下を覆うようなものかと思っていた(放浪の間にボロ布みたいになる)。
ritual 儀礼は長い時代を経てそのtruthを失い、代わりにおびただしいsignificance 意味づけ、解釈で装われている。このsignificanceは後から付けた虚飾、意味のないものだ。男どもは無数のdeities, demons, totems, spiritsを捏造する。Tuvekはそんな野蛮な虚飾をもとから蔑んでいるし、自分の肉体能力を自覚してからは尚更神々を必要としなかった。
タニス・リー魔術の主要概念としてtruthとかfaithは覚えておく。「意思と意図」という方が実践では前に出てくる。The Birthgraveの主人公はpurposeとindependenceがエネルギー源になっていた。「目的意識と自立への欲求」が原動力の女性像、と書くとフェミニズムの化身のようだが今は魔術で、フェミニズムは追々。
反因習や、反抗心は後にもずっと掲げていく。
Hunting the White Witch
Book 1 - Part II: The Sorcerer ここまで。2か月くらい、他に寄り道してびっくりするほど進んでいない。ここはまた、英語を読んでいる話なのに英語でコメント書くようにしたほうがいいのか……誰に向いているんだろう。
第3部になってヴァズカーがどんどん面白キャラになっていく。なんだかこのへんのいきさつは、古代ローマ頃の魔術師伝、シモン・マグスや、ルキアノスの「ペレグリーノスの昇天」だったかそんな連想をふとする。イエス・キリストの行跡を過度に誇張したようなダークヒーローみたいだ。それは、あまり気にせずにおくとして、タニス・リー作品でも「剣の戦い」が見せ場になっているのがバースグレイブシリーズは最初にして貴重な。
Book 1 - Part III: The Crimson Palace まで。
ヴァズカーの魔術については、平たい地球シリーズのダタンジャの魔術も較べて参照。ダタンジャのささやかな魔術は、見せかけのちゃちな小道具を使うことで「不思議さを相殺する」というもの。ヴァズカーの奇跡は驚異すぎる。
が、とんでもなくスペクタクルで面白い。ヴァズカーの女性遍歴では、マルミラネットの姿態にほんとうは全然似ていないディミズダーの面影をふと浮かべるヴァズカーは痛ましい。
I remain beside the road, impervious, and with no companion.
という言い方には Companions on the Road (1975, アヴィリスの妖杯) のタイトルを連想させるが。
「あらすじ」のように手短に説明しがたい混沌の展開……無数の凄惨な死、生と死を超克して深い悲しみと孤独、の数行あとには独特の"ヴァズカー節"のブラックユーモアが戻ってきて、不謹慎で冒瀆的も甚だしいが妙に清々しい変な笑いが込み上げてしばらくクスクス笑いが止まらなくなる。この三部作はほんとにすごいが……ほんとに疲れる。今夜中にこの章まで読んでしまおう。
